Against the Wall Gallery presents in August a new exhibit entitled Art
Gong: Sound Infinitum it will run August 6-31, 2010 with reception
Friday August 6 from 7-9 pm. For those unaware a gong is
an ancient sound instrument, looking much like a cymbal you would see on the
modern drumset, but instead is hit with a mallet and is usually suspended. The
gong has taken many forms and has been made and used by many different
cultures, in one form or another, throughout the world. We've asked Andrew Borakove, owner of Gongs Unlimited (www.gongs-unlimited.com) based here in Lincoln, to share with us a sliver of his extensive collection of gongs and bells from all over the world. There will be gongs from Nepal, China, Thailand and also from European artisans. Gongs Unlimited imports and then sells gongs all over the globe not only to musicians, but also businesses and spiritual healers. Gongs Unlimited also keeps it local, working with a group of Eastern Nebraska carpenters and metal artists. For this event, they have been dubbed the "Gong Pioneers." This group of local artisans includes Edwin Watters, Todd Rivers, Rob Weyant, Pat Carl and others who create beautiful stands and other embellishments to complement the gongs. Their work will be highlighted as well. At the opening reception Andrew will provide, with the help of Leila Zila, brief demonstrations of a Gong Bath. A Gong Bath is a spiritual centering tool that uses the vibrations of the gong to help calm scattered thoughts and improve internal focus and energy. Normally they can last 30 to 60 minutes. These baths will be shorter, so consider them Gong Sprinkles!  |
