October, Against The Wall Gallery features watercolorist
Sheila J. Downey. The exhibition will be on display
October 5–31, with an opening reception Friday,
October 5th,
2007 from 6 to 9 pm. Hors d’oeuvres and
refreshments will accompany the artwork as well as live
music by Lincoln cellist Cary Collingham from 7-8 pm. Ms. Downey will be
present to visit and answer any questions. Against the Wall Gallery is open Mon., Wed., Fri. and Sat. 10 to 5 pm and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 am to 7 pm. the Artist: Simplicity, line, composition, subtlety of color, depth, these are all hallmarks of Sheila’s stunning work. She is most concerned with describing the beauty, elegance and simplicity found in the form of her subjects, which more often than not is of native plant life. It is her love of plants that has inspired her large body of work. This can be taken literally as many of her paintings are very large, working on some of the largest watercolor paper available. Sheila began her journey in watercolor while attending her MA program at Kearney State College. She had always been attracted to drawing and specifically line. She began with printmaking but soon found herself trying to find a more direct approach to expressing her vision. This she found in watercolor. For more than 20 years she has been exploring this medium, exhibiting and winning numerous awards. Sheila currently resides in Naponee, Nebraska, but is a full time art instructor at St. Albert Catholic School in Council Bluffs, passing on the art fundamentals which she has mastered. Sheila holds professional membership in the Kansas Watercolor Society and is an exhibiting member at the Artist's Cooperative Gallery in Omaha, Nebraska.
