About Jim:
" I am an artist first and foremost. As I studied different art classes and helped a teacher friend with a class, I realized I took for granted the knowledge I had and could pass on.  When I started taking students about 20 years ago, my goal was to keep my classes small so I could give each student individual attention working in the medium they wanted & the subjects they wanted to produce.  I don't have "paint alongs".  I want to bring out the talent they have inside and help them become as good as only they could. I have been rewarded over the years by seeing students advance dramatically and produce great art drawings and paintings.  You can teach anyone to draw or paint. How good they become has to come from inside them.  The inner talent they may not have been aware of. That is what makes an artist."
For more information on Jim check out his biography & resume on our site here.

Comments from student Barbara Ridder:

"Jim teaches the full scope of ages and ability levels in a small class size whith much individual attention. By having the classes in his studio it provides the stimulus for students by seeing his work completed and in progress.
Allowing students to choose their own subject matter keeps the interest high while they are learning the elements of drawing and painting. He encourages the attention to detail and urges you to try increasingly difficult subject matter and techniques. He promotes pride in finished products."

About the Students:

Marie Watham  ( 16 )   Marie works in pencil and loves wildlife.  She had a natural talent when she started. She just had to give her drawings the finishing touches and composition that took them from good to professional. She is a perfectionist for detail that makes her subjects come alive. Her inner talent is capable of taking her as far as she wants to go.

Mark Watham  ( 14  )   Mark started in pencil and did well. He then wanted to paint in acrylic and his inner talent came out. He is producing exceptional work for his age. He likes wildlife but I know there are more subjects in his mind he would like to try.

Hana Bernhardson ( 16 )   Hana is working in pencil and has a good eye for detail. She enjoys a variety of subjects and is doing exceptional. Her potential is great and could take her to a much higher level. The variety of subjects and her interest in other mediums could bring out more of the talent she has inside.

Peter Bernhardson ( 11 )   Peter is young but has such a passion for art. He is working in pencil and is now advancing to colored pencil.  His subject matter is whatever he wants to do next and very versatile. I believe he has a lot of talent inside him and it is fun to see it come out.

Daniel Bernhardson ( 8 )   Daniel is fun, He is so excited about art and is doing work that is exceptional for his age. He can draw by looking at his subject and get the proportion right.  He has a natural eye for it. he is fast and sometimes hard to keep up with. If he keeps his interest he will become a good artist.

Adult:

Jerry Hall    Jerry is doing work in prismacolor pencil. His subjects is wildlife. He has done a series on butterflies and moths. His talent for them is apparent and exceptional. Jerry has advanced to doing art shows now and has been in the Lincoln Arts Festival at Southpointe for two years.  He has work hanging in the Burkholder Project and Against the Wall Gallery.  He works as a volunteer at the Lincoln Arts Council.

Barbara Ridder    Barb didn't know if she could paint or not but was interested enough to sit in on a class.  She started taking lessons and found more talent was in her than she was aware of . She has such a feeling for color and is fast to catch on. She has a natural ability that just flows out of her when she paints. Barb paints in acrylic and a lot of her subjects are scenes from places she has visited of lived at, all over the world. Her work is beautiful  and her use of color is breathtaking. It makes you feel like you are there. She has a good understanding of composition and it is a joy to help her project her talent.

Carol Watham    Carol is the mother of Marie and Mark. She started painting after her two children did. She enjoys painting scenery & florals in acrylic.
