From Jean Lewis:

"When a friend asked me if I was up for a prairie adventure, I said yes, not knowing it would turn out to be a prairie love affair. It's impossible not to fall in love with the tallgrass prairie once you spend time there. Going back to Spring Creek over and over again to photograph it through the seasons was all it took for me.

There is a sense of the sacred on the prairie. The Pawnee and other tribes understood the deep connection between the natural and spiritual worlds. This is echoed in the east Asian religions and Chinese philosophy, based on the teachings of Lao-Tzu, who advocated a life of simplicity and harmony with the natural world.

The Pawnee were prairie people. Their lives revolved around the seasonal changes. Planting gardens in the spring in the river bottoms and then traveling west for the summer buffalo hunt. Back to their permanent earth covered houses in time to harvest the gardens. The last autumn buffalo hunt set them up for winter.

To balance our technical world we need the quiet of the prairie. In the quiet we can listen to our inner, spiritual, selves. We can contemplate the lessons that we need to guide our world through the interconnected crises of climate, energy, pollution, and population."

Against The Wall Gallery features in July, new work from Lincoln photographer Jean Lewis. The exhibition is in collaboration with the Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center to raise awareness about the prairie ecosystem and its rapidly disappearing beauty and value. The exhibit will consist of a series of photographs Jean has taken over the past year, documenting the Spring Creek Prairie near Denton, Nebraska.

The exhibition will be on display July 1–30, with an opening reception Friday, July 1st, 2011 from 6 to 9 pm.  Jean Lewis will be present during the reception to visit and answer any questions. The exhibit will also double as a fundraiser. A percentage of proceeds from the sale of Jean’s work, 40% in total, will go towards supporting the efforts of the fine folks at Spring Creek Prairie. Jean Lewis is donating 20% herself and the other 20% will come from Against the Wall Gallery.

Jean Lewis has been photographing Nebraska for nearly 25 years. Led mainly by intuition and history, she scours the state, piecing together & documenting an image of Nebraska. She is constantly seeking images that are distillations of a place and the people that have lived there. She mainly shoots black & white film.
